Psellos, after strong pressure (he claimed) from Romanos IV, joined his 1069 expedition

Summary:
Romanos IV put such great pressure on Psellos to join his campaign that it was impossible to refuse. When he realised that Psellos was (theoretically) expert in strategy, in companies and formations, building siege-engines, sieges and all other aspects of military strategems, he admired him but was at the same time jealous

  • He will not now give the reason why Romanos 4 insisted that he join the campaign, since he is abbreviating many things in his history, but he will tell when he writes about these things
  • The many who were with him and Romanos 4 on campaign know that he does not exaggerate in this description (of Romanos 4's envy of his strategic knowledge) εἰδόσι δὲ λέγω πολλοῖς τοῖς τότε ἡμῖν συστρατεύουσιν, ὡς μὴ τῆς διαθέσεως ταύτης εἶναι ὑπερβολήν Psellos: Chronographia VIIb 16.8-9
  • When Romanos 4 saw that he was expert in strategy, in companies and formations, building engines, sieges and all other aspects of military dispositions he was admiring but also envious; Romanos opposed him in this and restrained him (:) ἀντείχετο δέ μου τοσοῦτον καὶ περιείχετο Psellos: Chronographia VIIb 16.3-8
