Nikephoros Botaneiates made strategos of Anatolikon

Summary:
Nikephoros Botaneiates was dismissed after the army had crossed the Sangarios. Romanos IV was suspicious of him (and not of the treacherous men he kept with him). He was later to be appointed strategos of Anatolikon by Michael VII

  • Was dismissed together with other men from the army after crossing the Sangarios by Romanos 4 who was suspicious of him and kept instead some treacherous men with him (:) ὡς ὑπόπτους διωσάμενος Skylitzes Continuatus 143.17-18
  • Made strategos of the Anatolikon theme by Michael 7 (VII Doukas) (:) στρατηγίας τῶν Ἀνατολικῶν Bryennios 55.3

  • Gathered his forces scattered by an enemy attack, selected some troops, dismissed the others including Nikephoros 3 Botaneiates of whom he was suspicious, took with him those prone to treachery, and advanced, unaware of his impending ills (:) Skylitzes Continuatus 143.10-20
