Despite recent captivity & good advice, Basileios Maleses, exiled by Nikephoritzes, lost his property

Despite his captivity after Mantzikert and his sensible advice to Michael VII to hasten and pay the ransom for Roussel de Bailleul and the kaisar Ioannes Doukas, to stop the latter being proclaimed emperor by the Turks, he was banished and he and his family had their properties confiscated

  • Suffered greatly during the rule of Michael 7, for, while in captivity (after Mantzikert), instead of benefitting from imperial compassion, he and his children (Anonymi 5012) had their properties confiscated by those in power (:) ἀντὶ ἐλέους βασιλικοῦ δήμευσιν ὑπέστη δωρεάν Attaleiates: History 187.24-188.5 / 139.3-7
  • Advised the emperor (Michael 7) to pay the ransom demanded by the Turks for the release of Roussel 61 and the kaisar (Ioannes 62) quickly, lest they proclaim the latter emperor, but he nevertheless had his properties confiscated and was banished (:) ὑπερορίαν κατεκρίθη καὶ δήμευσιν Attaleiates: History 192.13-20 / 142.7-13
  • Released by the kaisar (Ioannes 62) he warned the emperor (Michael 7, of the ransom requested by the Turks for Roussel 61 and the kaisar) but was banished and had his properties confiscated, after enduring two successive captivities (:) καὶ δημεύσει καθυποβάλλεται Skylitzes Continuatus 160.9-13
