Synodal tribunal investigates activities & beliefs of Jacobites in Syria

Summary:
Ioannes, metropolitan of Melitene, had convinced Romanos III and the patriarch Alexios I to help him against heretics. The patriarch twice gave heretic leaders a deadline to revert to orthodoxy; when they refused their leader Juhanna was excommunicated and banished to Mt Ganos. A synod was convened by Romanos III and Alexios to confirm this action and reinstate three repentant bishops as chorepiskopoi. Besides the convenors, 46 metropolitans and 14 high lay officials are recorded as attending. When Nikolaos II, the orthodox patriarch of Antioch, was in the capital, he refused to appear together with Alexios I
