The first embassy of Psellos & his colleagues, they say, was ignored

Skylitzes and Aristakes mention the first embassy to Isaakios without details as a failure. This is confirmed by an early but particularly unreliable text of Psellos, his undelivered speech against Keroularios (Ketegoria) [The embassy's true status will doubtless be somewhere between this and the total success reported by Psellos in the Chronographia]

Emperor Isaakios I Komnenos (Isaakios 1)
  • Being generous and wealthy he managed to gather a large army, and when the emperor (Michael 6) realized this he sent him envoys promising money and the authority of kouropalates of the east in exchange for laying down his arms, but he refused (:) Aristakes 104.112
  • He received envoys from the defeated Michael 6, offering to share power, but he refused; the envoys, after consultation, returned to offer him a more active role, reserving for Michael only the imperial name, a proposal which he accepted (:) Psellos Kategoria 1375-1385

  • Returned to the emperor (Michael 6) after the unsuccessful mission to Komnenos (Isaakios 1), but was sent back on a second embassy, and met Komnenos at the village of Reai: in association with Theodoros 106, Michael 61 (:) Skylitzes 497.91-93
Emperor Michael VI Stratiotikos (Michael 6)
  • After the unsuccessful mission of his envoys Konstantinos 13, Theodoros 106 and Psellos (Michael 61) to Komnenos (Isaakios 1), he sent them back offering to proclaim the rebel emperor and confirm the honours he had conferred upon his supporters (:) Skylitzes 497.91-1
