Ioannes Xiphilinos appointed patriarch, once the search spread to Mt Olympos; he accepted "demotion" from the monastery

Summary:
After a considerable interregnum following the death of Konstantinos Leichoudes, the search for a new patriarch was extended beyond Constantinople to Mt Olympos. At once the choice fell on Ioannes Xiphilinos, who had to be persuaded to leave Olympos for "demotion" to patriarch

  • Considered the most worthy candidate for the patriarchal throne and appointed to this office unwillingly, he succeeded Konstantinos 13 Leichoudes after the latter's death (:) Skylitzes Continuatus 117.13-21
  • Considered the best candidate (for the patriarchal throne) he was appointed unwillingly to succeed Konstantinos 13 (:) καὶ βίᾳ πρὸς τὴν ἀξίαν ἕλκεται Glykas 606.17-18
  • After spending a considerable time there [on Olympos] he was judged worthy of the patriarchal throne (:) Zonaras 18.9.18

  • After his death he was succeeded by Ioannes 18 Xiphilinos Skylitzes Continuatus 117.13-14
