Death of patriarch Ioannes VIII Xiphilinos, to be replaced by Kosmas I

Summary:
The patriarch Ioannes VIII Xiphilinos died, after shepherding the church for eleven years and seven months. In his place, Michael VII chose Kosmas I, a monk from Jerusalem who had come to the capital, a man of the highest reputation, unacquainted with learning but adorned with every kind of virtue

  • After his death the emperor (Michael 7) appointed Kosmas to succeed him κοιμηθέντος καὶ πρὸς τὴν ἀγύρω λῆξιν μεταθεμένου Skylitzes Continuatus 176.6-10
  • Was transferred to the eternal abodes after shepherding the church for eleven years and seven months Zonaras 18.18.3

Kosmas I, patriarch of Constantinople (Kosmas 11)
  • Arrived (at Constantinople) from the holy city (Jerusalem) and after the death of Ioannes 18 Xiphilinos he was appointed by the emperor (Michael 7) to succeed him (as patriarch of Constantinople) (:) τῆς ἁγίας μὲν πόλεως ἀφιγμένον Skylitzes Continuatus 176.6-14
  • Was bestowed the greatest honour for his conspicuous integrity by the emperor (Michael 7) who overlooked everybody else and placed him at the helm of the Church (:) Skylitzes Continuatus 176.10-14
  • Shortly after the death of Ioannes 18 Xiphilinos he was elected patriarch, a man unacquainted with learning but adorned with every kind of virtue, and on this account held in highest honour even by the emperor (Michael 7) (:) Zonaras 18.18.3
