Herakleia in Thrace captured by rebels of Nikephoros Bryennios led by his brother Ioannes

Summary:
Nikephoros Bryennios sent his brother Ioannes against Constantinople. On the way Ioannes attacked, pillaged and captured Herakleia, whose inhabitants remained loyal to Michael VII. Alexios Komnenos who was encamped at Selymbria retreated hastily to Constantinople

  • Was encamped at Selymbria which he left with his troops and returned hastily to Constantinople after the fall of Herakleia to Ioannes 61 Bryennios (:) τῇ βασιλευούσῃ σπουδαίως ἐπανελήλυθεν Attaleiates: History 250.19-23 / 181.5-7
  • Encamped at Selymbria but withdrew when Ioannes 61, sent by his brother Nikephoros 62 Bryennios against Constantinoiple, ravaged Herakleia and killed many of its defenders (:) ὑποχωρήσαντος ἔναγχος τοῦ προέδρου Skylitzes Continuatus 174.25-175.1

  • Captured Herakleia when its citizens did not consent to the accession of his brother Nikephoros 62 Bryennios because they included soldiers supporting the emperor (Michael 7), and he killed many and pillaged both inside and outside the city (:) κατὰ κράτος εἷλε καὶ πολλοὺς ἀνεῖλεν αὐτῆς Attaleiates: History 250.14-19 / 181.1-4
  • Ravaged Herakleia and killed many of its defenders when Alexios 1 Komnenos withdrew from Selymbria, but after his army's failed attack on Constantinople he took two tagmata and went to Athyras, sending the rest of his troops to winter (:) εἰς παραχειμασίαν ἀπέστειλεν Skylitzes Continuatus 174.24-175.8
