Summary:
Alexios I removed Nikephoros Botaneiates from power, ascended the throne, and reigned piously for 37 years and four and a half months. He was strongly supported by his mother Anna Dalassene and his brother Isaakios

  • Assumed the imperial diadem (:) Zonaras 18.21.5
Anna Dalassene (Anna 61)
  • When her son Alexios 1 ascended the throne she remained by his side (:) παρ᾿ αὐτοῖς οὖν ἡ βασιλεία καὶ τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῶν Glykas 618.17
  • Had no share in the imperial insignia on account of her nun’s habit, nor indeed in the acclamation and proclamation, and shared the name of empire alone; but herself assumed the entire administration of affairs (:) Zonaras 18.21.6
Isaakios Komnenos, elder brother of Alexios I (Isaakios 61)

  • Alexios 1 associated him in power with him because he respected him as a father in everything (:) Anna Komnene 90.92-93
