Alexios I sought to win allies against Robert Guiscard

Summary:
Alexios I realised he had to take the initiative against Robert Guiscard, by influencing his counts and other western allies against him. He therefore sent letters with moderate gifts to Hermann, duke of Lombardy, pope Gregory VII, and Herve archbishop of Capua, together with all the other leaders of the Keltic lands, promising greater subventions and dignities if they renounced Guiscard
