Celebrations after the return of Ioannes II from Syria & Cilicia

Summary:
Ioannes held hippodrome races to celebrate his return from the long expedition, again stressing that he had reached Mesopotamia rather than mentioning Antioch. He also held two (probably more) marriages for unidentifiable members of the imperial family: both brides were imperial granddaughters, one the daughter of a daughter, the other was marrying a Doukas. He probably also on this occasion dedicated a holy grave in a church with its own golden candlesticks

Emperor Ioannes II Komnenos (Ioannes 2)
  • Deme poems from hippodrome races dramatised the tension built up before the emperor's appearance, and its resolution; they stress imperial sun-symbolism, Ioannes' heritage as a Doukas, and the successes of the campaign of 1137-1139 (:) Prodromos, Historische Gedichte XII
  • While absent from the capital, he increased Byzantine power, while present he put on celebrations, e.g. sponsoring with Alexios 103, Andronikos 109, Isaakios 103 and Manuel 1 the marriage of his granddaughter Anonyma 25004 (:) Prodromos, Historische Gedichte XIII
  • Having married off one Komnene on returning from the east, he now married off another as he marched again against the Turks; these wedding celebrations (now again a Komnene to a Doukas) must be added to his other benefactions (:) Prodromos, Historische Gedichte XIV
  • He dedicated in a church a holy grave equipped with its own golden lamps, in return for military success [perhaps the expedition of 1137-1139, as Theodoros Prodromos' poem follows XVIII in the Mss without a title] (:) Prodromos, Historische Gedichte XXII

Theodoros Prodromos, man of letters (Theodoros 25001)
  • He complained that he, like all the city's poor, had seen Ioannes 2 briefly since his three-year absence, and enjoyed hippodrome races and weddings, with fun, food and drink; but now he was losing him again on campaign (:) Prodromos, Historische Gedichte XVI.127-162
