Death of Alexios & Andronikos, sons of Ioannes II, around Attaleia

Summary:
Before Ioannes II reached Cilicia, he lost his eldest son and co-emperor Alexios, as predicted in a dream he had seen long ago of Alexios riding a wild lion. The illness was sudden, a fever attacking the head. His second son Andronikos had barely time for mourning before he died too

  • He died shortly after his brother Alexios 103, so that he barely had time to mourn him (:) Niketas Choniates, Historia 38.16-19

  • He is said to have seen in a dream his eldest son, Alexios 103, riding a wild lion, using its ears as reins but unable otherwise to tame it; it meant that he would enjoy imperial power in name only and die young, in 1142 (:) Niketas Choniates, Historia 17.32-38
  • Before reaching Cilicia, around the time of his operations on Lake Pousgouse, he lost Alexios 103, as predicted in a dream he had seen long before; soon after, his second son Andronikos 109 died also (:) Niketas Choniates, Historia 17.34-38
  • Was deprived of his two eldest sons before he reached Cilicia (:) δυεῖν μὲν ἀφῄρητο παίδων οἳ χρόνῳ προῆκον Kinnamos 24.4-5
  • Wished to send his eldest son Alexios 103 to Rome to be crowned (?), Andronikos 109 to Jerusalem and Isaakios 103 elsewhere, but God had other plans, for Alexios and Andronikos died and their bodies had to be taken back to Constantinople by Isaakios [proposals which have not been seen as credible] (:) διὰ τὸ βουλεύσασθαι τὸν μὲν πρῶτον υἱὸν αὐτοῦ, τὸν κῦριν Ἀλέξιον, ποιῆσαι βασιλέα ἐν Ῥώμῃ, τὸν δὲ κῦριν Ἀνδρόνικον ἐν τοῖς τῶν Ἱεροσολύμων τόποις καὶ τὸν κῦριν Ἰσαάκιον ἀλλαχοῦ Kleinchroniken 58.2
  • While he was still near Attaleia, he lost both his first son Alexios 103 and his second son Andronikos 109 to illness; the third, Isaakios 103 he told to take their bodies by ship for burial in the capital (where he would remain), while Manuel 1, the youngest, stayed with him on campaign (:) William of Tyre bk. 15, 19.11-21

  • After the death of his two elder brothers Alexios 103 and Andronikos 109 near Attaleia, he was told by Ioannes 2 to take their bodies back to the capital by ship and see to their burial; he would remain there till the death of Ioannes (:) William of Tyre bk. 15, 19.12-20
