Ioannes II at Antioch in 1137: issues of status & details of the agreement

Summary:
[The information provided by Italikos is generally regarded as a symbolic representation of a Byzantine view of what occurred. It is most unlikely, for example, that Fulk was anywhere near Antioch at the time, so his removal of his crown in favour of Ioannes did not occur outside a possible symbolic dimension. However other details of the agreement as preserved - that Raymond of Antioch, Joscelin of Edessa and perhaps the newly-promoted Raymond of Tripoli were to fight with Ioannes to gain a new principality for Raymond, so that he could hand Antioch to the Byzantines, seem to accord with the campaign that followed. The new fief should include Aleppo, Shayzar, Hama and Homs. There are other points, like that of demonstrating vassal status by entertaining a hypothetical lord, which do not claim any reality beyond the sphere of competing status. There was probably a clause guaranteeing Ioannes access to Antioch in some way, to justify Ioannes' apparent demand in 1138 to control the citadel]
Dates:
1137:
Fulk V, count of Anjou, king of Jerusalem (Fulk 4001)
  • He removed his crown, as Ioannes 2 was the only basileus [very unlikely], just like other proud Frankish rulers, Raymond 17001 of Antioch, Joscelin 4002 of Edessa and Raymond 4004 of Tripoli, who were constrained by Ioannes to fight for him (:) Italikos 260.6-261.23
Emperor Ioannes II Komnenos (Ioannes 2)
  • He made the Antiochenes reach agreement, clipping their wings; proud Frankish rulers, Raymond 17001, Joscelin 4002 of Edessa and Pons 4002 of Tripoli agreed to fight for him; Fulk 4001 removed his crown, as Ioannes was the only basileus [very unlikely] (:) Italikos 260.6-261.23
  • By the terms of the agreement, Raymond 17001 went to Ioannes' camp, and before all the courtiers he swore fealty to Ioannes, promising him free access to Antioch; Ioannes also proposed to conquer a new fief for Raymond (: ) William of Tyre bk. 14, 30.26-34
  • He entered Antioch, welcomed with open arms by Raymond 17001 and all the people; he stayed for some days, showing the liege status of Raymond and Raymond 4004 of Tripoli, then decided to attack nearby cities under Muslim control (:) λίζιον ἑαυτῷ τὸν πρίγκιπα δείξας Niketas Choniates, Historia 27.2-9
Joscelin II, count of Edessa (Joscelin 4002)
  • Like other proud Frankish rulers, Raymond 17001 of Antioch and Pons 4002 of Tripoli, Joscelin was constrained by Ioannes 2 to fight for him; Fulk 4001 removed his crown, as Ioannes was the only basileus [very unlikely] (:) Italikos 260.6-261.23
Raymond II, count of Tripoli (Raymond 4004)
  • Like other proud Frankish rulers, Joscelin 4002 of Edessa and Raymond 17001 of Antioch, Raymond was constrained by Ioannes 2 to fight for him; Fulk 4001 removed his crown, as Ioannes was the only basileus [very unlikely] (:) Italikos 260.6-261.23
  • He was associated with Raymond 17001 in entertaining Ioannes 2 in Antioch, and thus joined him in demonstrating his status as a Byzantine vassal (:) Niketas Choniates, Historia 27.6-7
Raymond of Poitiers, prince of Antioch (Raymond 17001)
  • Like other proud Frankish rulers, Joscelin 4002 of Edessa and Raymond 4004 of Tripoli, Raymond was constrained by Ioannes 2 to fight for him; Fulk 4001 removed his crown, as Ioannes was the only basileus [very unlikely] (:) Italikos 260.6-261.23
  • If Ioannes 2 conquered Aleppo, Shayzar, Hama and Homs, he should freely give them in fief to Raymond; in return, Raymond should then freely give Antioch to Ioannes; Raymond left with rich gifts and the imperial standard flew over Antioch (: ) William of Tyre bk. 14, 30.34-55
