Venetians in Constantinople destroyed Genoese property & refused to make restitution

Summary:
A division had arisen between Venetians living outside the Venetian quarter (often with Byzantine wives) as against the impermanent traders; the former were called “burgesses” and had pledged lifelong obediance to the Byzantines. Both categories quarrelled with the Genoese, destroyed their houses and did other damage. Manuel demanded restitution, but they refused and hinted at reprisals like those 50 years earlier against Ioannes II: thus Manuel thought of expulsion
