Stephen of La Ferte had come as a pilgrim to pray in Jerusalem, and was waiting for a ship home when the patriarch Gormond died. Stephen was unanimously elected patriarch in his place. He would disagree with Baldwin II, claiming Jaffa for the church, and Jerusalem too once Askalon was captured
