Much of the wealth of Michael Attaleiates' foundation consisted of houses and properties purchased by him from the estate of his wife, Sophia, and her female relations. He bought Sophia's property of Selokaka after her death. Euphrosyne Bobaina, her aunt, when she was tonsured, reserved her house in the kastron of Raidestos and her property of Lips or Baboulou for Michael to purchase: he later bought the house and was bequeathed the property. Anastaso, Sophia's sister, sold him a house in Constantinople. The purchase of this house and of Selokaka was administered by imperial officials, presumably to ensure a fair price. Other properties were purchased from a niece of the patrikios Basileios Skribas, Psorarios and Narses. Neighbouring houses in Constantinople and Raidestos were joined together to make a monastery in the capital and a poorhouse in Raidestos. A major part of the institution in Raidestos had to be rebuilt, since it had suffered from neglect and an earthquake (presumably that of September, 1063). The work described here will have covered much of the decade of the 1060s and beyond
