The rebel eastern generals, when they heard of the capture of Bryennios, feared that if tortured, he might betray them. Thus they travelled to the east and met at the home of Isaakios Komnenos at Kastamon. They had to elect a leader. Katakalon Kekaumenos and Konstantinos (X) Doukas were reportedly asked to take the position, but both stood aside for Isaakios (I). Those reported at the gathering were Isaakios Komnenos, Katakalon Kekaumenos.
