Romanos Diogenes sent Theodoros Alyates to fight the army of Konstantinos Doukas, which was supplemented at a crucial moment by Robert Crépin, who was able to suborn Alyates' Franks in their own language. Alyates was defeated and captured and his eyes were gouged out with tent-poles, which distressed Romanos greatly. Konstantinos Doukas returned to Constantinople and his army was dispersed because winter was approaching. Romanos, who in some sources played an active role in the battle himself, escaped to the fortress of Tyropoion
