In a letter to Georgios, metropolitan of Athens, Tornikes was plainly approaching a crisis (episcopal elections?) and wary of the attitude of Konstantinos Chliarenos, the new patriarch, to whom his access was restricted. Konstantinos' hostility to Georgios the metropolitan and his clan had already been shown in ways of which Georgios did not need to be reminded. Tornikes hoped that this animosity did not extend to him, in view of the upcoming crisis. He finally thanked his correspondent for tactful treatment of his brother Leon
