Hassan ibn al-Mufarrij, when he received the imperial strandard sent by Romanos III, boasted that he would soon conquer his enemies' lands with the emperor's help. Rafi' ibn Abi l-Layl's properties had been appropriated by the Maghrebins, and so he joined Hassan in an attack on al-Dizbiri, near Bostra. They were initially successful, but were eventually forced to flee to a camp in the desert. Hassan's properties too were subsequently taken by the Maghrebins and granted to their Arab allies
