Konstantinos IX organised a huge army under Stephanos the eunuch against Georgios Maniakes

Summary:
Konstantinos IX, when conciliatory gestures towards Maniakes failed and Pardos his envoy was killed, appointed the eunuch Stephanos Pergamenos as strategos autokrator and raised a huge army, including men from every race and city. Stephanos was chosen because of his loyalty to Konstantinos, who could not campaign himself because of his gout
