Roussel held Basileios Maleses (just released by Turks) as prisoner & (probably) advocate of peace

Summary:
Basileios Maleses, who had been captured during the battle of Mantzikert and was only recently released by the Turks, was captured again after the defeat of the kaisar Ioannes Doukas by Roussel de Bailleul. The latter treated Maleses very well, made him his advisor and took him along in his advance against Constantinople

  • Denied by oath to his friend Michael 202 what many claimed, namely that he prevented peace between Michael 7 Doukas and the rebel Roussel 61 because of his hatred towards the emperor and in order to avenge the criminals (who confiscated his properties) (:) ἵνα τοὺς ἀλιτηρίους ἀμύνηται Attaleiates: History 188.1-8 / 139.3-9
Ioannes Doukas, kaisar (Ioannes 62)
  • Roussel 61 hastened towards Byzantium, leading him as prisoner and also Basileios 102 Maleses who had recently been released from captivity together with (Romanos 4) Diogenes (:) Zonaras 18.16.21
Michael Attaleiates (Michael 202)
