A letter asking for Bohemond's intervention was intercepted at Laodikeia

Summary:
Daimbert and Tancred broke their oath to the deceased Godfrey, that the succession should go to one of his blood. They sent Daimbert's secretary Morellus with a letter to ask Bohemond to intervene. Morellus' letter was intercepted at Laodikeia. Though it is said that it was seized by Raymond of Toulouse, the action was probably taken by his wife or one of their men, as Raymond was in Constantinople. Thus the plot was revealed. [In any case, Bohemond was already in captivity before the letter could have reached him.] Raymond had gone to Constantinople and had been welcomed by Alexios. When the emperor heard that Baldwin had become king of Jerusalem, he kept Raymond with him to help deal with the crusaders of 1101
Dates:
1100 August
Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (Alexios 1)
  • He welcomed Raymond 61 to Constantinople, on the journey which [in the mistaken view of Anna Komnene] helped to disqualify him from the kingship of Jerusalem; when Alexios heard that the throne had gone to Baldwin 51, he kept Raymond in the capital to help him deal with the crusaders of 1101 (:) Anna Komnene 346.52-55
Bohemond of Taranto (Bohemond 61)
  • Just after his imprisonment, he was invited by Daimbert 4001 and Tancred 61 to manage the succession to Godfrey 51 in Jerusalem; the letter was intercepted by Raymond 61 and the treachery revealed (August:in mense Augusto) Albert of Aachen VII.27
  • Was asked by Daimbert 4001 to intervene, by letter or even by force, to stop Baldwin 51 from reaching Jerusalem; did not receive the letter, as he was a prisoner (: ) William of Tyre bk. 10, 4.1-5.5

  • Fearing union of Baldwin 51 with his supporters in Jerusalem, wrote asking Bohemond 61 to stop him, by letter or even force (letter quoted, maybe Daimbert?s sense in William 4001?s language); Bohemond, in captivity, did not receive the letter (: ) William of Tyre bk. 10, 3.28-5.5
Morellus, secretary of the patriarch Daimbert (Morellus 26101)
  • Daimbert 4001 and Tancred 61 sent him with a letter to Antioch to ask Bohemond 61 to manage the succession to Godfrey 51; the letter was intercepted by Raymond 61 at Laodikeia, revealing the plot; in any case, Bohemond was by then in prison (:) Albert of Aachen VII.27, VII.46
Raymond of Saint-Gilles, count of Toulouse (Raymond 61)
  • He [or his men, for he was not at Laodikeia] intercepted the treacherous letter given to Morellus 26101 by Daimbert 4001 and Tancred 61, inviting Bohemond 61 to manage the succession to Godfrey 51; the whole plot was thus revealed (:) Albert of Aachen VII.27
  • He went to Constantinople; this [in the mistaken view of Anna Komnene] helped to disqualify him from the kingship of Jerusalem; when Alexios 1 heard that the throne had gone to Baldwin 51, he kept Raymond in the capital to help him deal with the crusaders of 1101 (:) Anna Komnene 346.52-55
